Following a series of tense and inflammatory incidents that originated from an accusation by a Vaipae-pae-o-Pau villager's wife of being attacked by men from Nukunoni, a complex sequence of events unfolded.

In an attempt to resolve the situation, Vaipae extended an invitation to Nukunoni for a Ti feast. However, this gathering turned into a trap, leading to the horrific outcome of Nukunoni villagers being cooked. In retaliation, Nukunoni allied with neighboring villages, intent on avenging their loss. Realizing the slim odds of victory against a united front, Vaipae sought a peaceful resolution to prevent further bloodshed.

The artwork captures a moment from this period of strife, portraying Vaipae villagers as they prepare a paoa (a type of tapa cloth). The process involved draping the cloth over a heat source and infusing it with aromas from specially chosen plants placed over an umu (traditional ground oven).

This scented Paoa was then donned by a young woman from Vaipae who positioned herself upwind from the Nukunoni chief, aiming to charm and captivate him. This clever strategy was effective, leading to the restoration of peace between the villages.
