Cook Island artists use natural materials such as coconut oil, pigments made from ground shell, and brushes made from pandanus leaf stems.
You will need a few tools to make your own Cook Island artwork. These include:
• Coconut Oil – This is used to mix the paint with water. It also helps keep the pigment from drying out too quickly.
• Pigment – This is the color that makes up the paint. There are different kinds of pigments available, some more expensive than others.
• Brush – This is used to apply the paint onto the canvas.
• Water – This is needed to dilute the paint so that it flows smoothly.
Cook Island artists use a variety of techniques when creating their paintings. They start by drawing the outline of the design using charcoal. Then they add details to the design using acrylic paints. Finally, they fill in the rest of the design using oil pastels.
